5 Reasons to Visit the Galapagos Islands

19 Aug 2024 Experiences

The Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador, were formed by millennia of volcanic activity and are one of the most spectacular destinations to visit. As well as an incredible variety of landscapes, including pristine beaches, mangrove forests, tide pools and lava tunnels, the islands are home to wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. This spectacular archipelago is undoubtedly one of nature’s most impressive wonders and a must-see for your bucket list – here are five reasons why.

Unique Wildlife

From giant tortoises to blue-footed boobies, you’ll find it all. If you are seeking unbelievable wildlife encounters, there's nowhere like the Galapagos. Each day will bring something new, including colourful marine iguanas, Galapagos tortoises - gentle giants that roam the arid islands - and over 50 native bird species. The amazing and unique wildlife of the Galapagos varies from island to island - you may recall that the finches of the islands famously helped Darwin prove his theory of evolution when he visited in 1835.

Diverse Landscapes

Created by millennia of volcanic activity, lava has shaped the Galapagos into a land of incredible variety. Visitors are often surprised by the wide range of scenery, from sparkling turquoise beaches to lush cloud forests teeming with bird life. As travellers explore the islands, they'll encounter arid terrain dotted with prickly pear cactus, mangrove forests, lava fields and bright blue cenotes or sinkholes.

Volcanic Activity

Want to feel like you're on another planet? The ancient lava flows of Galapagos can do just that. There are 21 volcanoes in the Galapagos, all carefully monitored by national park scientists. This is one of the planet's most active volcanic hot spots - you might be lucky enough to see an eruption, from a safe distance. Otherwise, you can explore the moon-like terrain created by past eruptions - including craters covered in hardened lava flow, underground lava tunnels and crescent-shaped bays, the remains of ancient calderas.

Marine Life

Grab a snorkel and swim into a whole new world. Whether you’re eager to jump in or prefer to watch breaching dolphins from the deck of your expedition vessel, the underwater activity in the Galapagos is rich and plentiful. Depending on the time of year, it's possible to see whale sharks, manta rays and Galapagos penguins. Plus, Galapagos fur seals, green sea turtles, dolphins and large schools of tropical fish are pretty much a guarantee!
