Lesser-Known Fall Wonders

As the days grow cooler and the air takes on a refreshing crispness, it's the perfect season to savour the changing scenery and embrace the cosiness of fall. One of the best things about travelling in the fall is the quieter atmosphere, with fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy the sights without any photobombers. While Canada is known for being one of the best places to experience fall, with its iconic maple leaves, there are plenty of lesser-known destinations that offer an equally stunning autumn display. It’s time to discover fall colours in unexpected places!

Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

As an alternative to Japan’s famous autumn leaves, head to South Korea’s Seoraksan National Park, a three hour drive from Seoul. Stunning in any season, the park is particularly spectacular in autumn when it transforms into a sea of yellow and red. Hike the scenic trails past tranquil streams and tumbling waterfalls as you try to glimpse of the park’s rare species like Korean musk deer and Siberian flying squirrels. If you prefer not to walk, take the Seoraksan cable car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress to take in the breathtaking views.

Bariloche, Argentina

Detour past North America's fall splendour, south to Bariloche, nestled in the heart of the Andes in Argentina. Time your trip for late April or early May when the foliage transforms the landscape into a fiery painter's palette. Outdoor enthusiasts will relish canopy zip-lining, lakeside horse treks, kayaking and more, while gastronomes can savour tucking into hearty Patagonian dishes like lamb barbecue and lentil casserole, sampling local craft beers or making the most of Bariloche's artisanal chocolate shops!

Arrowtown, New Zealand

A charming historic gold-mining town, Arrowtown is a delightful spot to experience autumn in New Zealand. As the leaves turn golden, the streets lined with quaint cottages and poplar trees create a picturesque setting. Stroll along the Arrow River, visit local shops and discover the area's rich gold-mining history - you might even try your hand at gold panning to uncover a nugget or two!

Lake District, England

England's Lake District is known for its poetic landscapes, serene lakes and rolling hills. As its sweeping valleys turn to shades of orange, yellow and gold, autumn heralds the start of foraging season, with the best of local produce on show and festivals celebrating the harvest. Spend the day hiking beside mirror-lake lakes that reflect and amplify the surrounding visual splendour. Later, relax in a charming country inn or historic pub, complete with crackling fire, and explore the Cumbrian larder in all its goodness.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Eastern Europe often gets forgotten about but autumn at Lake Bled in Slovenia sees warm shades of yellow, brown, red and purple further entice visitors. Take a canoe out for a spin and a view of the famous castle, or engage a local "pletna" boatman to take you to the island of Bled on a traditional boat. Ring the wishing bell and climb to the bell tower, where every 15 minutes you can observe the mechanical oscillation clock in action. Don't miss trying the traditional Slovenian dessert potica or taking a dip in some of the thermal spring in hotels on the eastern side of the lake.
