This famous road is a 1,322km loop giving you a tour of Iceland's volcanic terrain, icy glaciers and cascading waterfalls. At times, you might feel like you are the only people on the planet as the road can feel quite remote, with no cities or towns in sight. Don’t forget to make stops at Black Sand Beach, Skogafoss waterfall and the geothermal area of Geysir.

Get ready for an epic road trip along South Africa’s Panorama Route! Stretching about 160km, this scenic drive is packed with jaw-dropping views and natural wonders at every turn. While you could technically cover it in three to four hours without stopping, where’s the fun in that? Take your time to soak up the magic of God’s Window, witness the swirling rock formations of Bourke’s Luck Potholes and chase waterfalls at Berlin and Lisbon Falls. Trust us – this is one drive where the journey is just as spectacular as the destination!

South Island, New Zealand

Every twist and turn you take on a road trip through the South Island in New Zealand will leave you mesmerised by the natural beauty of this country. With the mountains as the backdrop to icy glaciers and turquoise-blue lakes, there is so much to see. Start your trip from Queenstown and make your way to Milford Sound through the Homer Tunnel, which is a 1.2km long tunnel through rock. Continue your journey around the island, passing through the Catlins where you can see yellow-eyed penguins and in Dunedin stop at the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street. Also, make your way to Mount Cook and Tekapo, where you can enjoy stargazing at the hot pools.

Get ready for one of Canada’s ultimate scenic road trips! The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia is packed with sea cliffs, rugged coastal hikes, sandy beaches and untouched wilderness – no wonder it’s considered one of the most beautiful road trips in North America. Spanning part of Cape Breton, which makes up just 18% of Nova Scotia’s land and 14% of its population, this trip can be done in three to five days, giving you plenty of time to explore and tackle those winding roads. Don’t forget to pull over for some freshly caught lobster – seriously, it’s next-level good! You will drive through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and the Skyline Trail at sunset is an absolute must for the most epic views.

Why stick to a car when you can kick it up a notch and rent a motorbike? Feel the wind in your hair as you cruise through the landscapes of northern Thailand – it’s the perfect way to push yourself a little out of your comfort zone! This 660km loop takes you from the temple-filled city of Chiang Mai through the Mae Hong Son Province and back again. Sure, you could technically power through it in about 12 hours, but where’s the fun in that? Give yourself three to four days to truly soak it all in – stop by glittering golden pagodas, visit remote hill tribes and take a refreshing hike to hidden waterfalls.

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning one of the iconic roads in the United States. It stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica, passing through eight states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. With so much to see and experience along the way, Route 66 is often dubbed the ‘Main Street of America’. The journey spans approximately 2,448 miles, taking travellers to Springfield, the capital of Illinois, Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch in California and much more.
